Malaysia’s Beauty Industry All Set To Glow With Latest MOU Signing

Developing Skill Training Programmes

An MOU signing between JPK, PIKMM and the Ministry of Human Resources to set up an accredited centre to realise this initiative

The LisAffair team had the privilege to witness a moment of progress for Malaysia’s beauty industry as an MOU was signed between the Malaysian Department of Skills Development (Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran – JPK), Ministry of Human Resources and Modern Beauty Industry Association Malaysia (PIKMM) at Sunway Velocity Mall.

Malaysia’s beauty industry has contributed RM13.5 billion to the domestic economy along with a healthy workforce of 80,000 beauticians and beauty consultants and therapists alike.

Based on these statistics, it is evident that Malaysia’s beauty industry has the potential to grow.

Over the years, the Department of Skills Development (JPK) coordinated training for Malaysian citizens by researching and developing standards to evaluate job expertise and competency.

Meanwhile, the Modern Beauty Industry Association (PIKMM) is on a mission to revolutionise the beauty industry by upgrading its training capacity and empowering its talents to better fulfil the needs of clients.

The Beauty Industry In Malaysia

So far, Malaysia’s beauty institutes and professionals have not been accrediting with training, recognition or certifications

Over the past ten years, the growth of the beauty industry has led to the development of new technologies and the invention of modern beauty treatment machines — such as laser treatments and energy/light-based technologies like non-invasive lasers and IPL.

However, there has been no appropriate training, recognition or certifications that can accredit Malaysia’s beauty institutes and professionals.

The objective of a beautician is to deliver treatment to the client effectively and with minimal discomfort. And with the rapid development of new beauty machines and technologies, it’s crucial for Malaysian beauticians to stay formally trained and updated on the correct treatments and procedures.

A quick look at the beauty scene in leading countries such as England, Australia, New Zealand and the United States shows that these countries place importance on highly trained staff.

Thanks to a simple and clear accreditation process, beauticians are trained to use laser and light treatment machines correctly and safely — A move that has led to growth in the economy and beauty industry of these countries.

The Objectives

Laser treatments are rising in Malaysia and, JPK and PIKMM have agreed to develop skill training programmes

Meetings and discussions between JPK and PIKMM have led to both parties agreeing to develop skill training programmes as it is important to set standards for accreditation.

These programmes aim to improve the quality of the beauty industry’s human resources and produce a world-class skilled workforce capable of using the latest laser and light treatment machines.

Both parties agreed that the course module is included as an addition to the existing NOSS – Field of Beauty, Part S96, Field: Beauty Therapy which will ensure that high standards of training are met whilst achieving practical objectives in terms of skill breadth and depth for accredited treatments.

The module-based approach will also serve as a vocational training platform that should encourage Malaysia to become a regional leader and centre of beauty excellence.
