Malaysia’s First Highway Marathon Breaks Records at IJM Allianz Duo Challenge 2024
Setting A New Record With 10,000 Runners Conquer Malaysia’s First Highway Marathon
Last weekend, the sixth edition of the IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge saw an impressive turnout of over 10,000 participants, each displaying remarkable determination and resilience.
This year’s event introduced an exciting new challenge—the 42.195km Full Marathon, marking Malaysia’s first-ever full marathon held on a closed highway.
The race offered runners a thrilling experience as they tackled the unique course along the interconnected NPE and BESRAYA highways.
Datuk Lee Chun Fai, Group CEO and Managing Director of IJM Corporation Berhad expressed his enthusiasm for the return of the challenge in its sixth edition.
He highlighted the addition of the Full Marathon as a key milestone, bringing a heightened sense of excitement to the event.
“For the first time, we’ve combined the NPE and BESRAYA highways into a single route, providing runners with a one-of-a-kind running experience,” he shared. “We’re also introducing a 1.5km Junior category to inspire the next generation of runners. This challenge underscores our dedication to promoting a healthy lifestyle and creating unforgettable moments for our participants.”
The event was officially flagged off by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. This year’s format, with the NPE and BESRAYA routes, merged into one event, marked a change from previous editions where the races were held on separate days.
The Full Marathon kicked off at 3 AM from Sunway Pyramid, with runners navigating the NPE Highway through Templer and Kuchai Lama, then continuing onto the BESRAYA Highway at Jalan Pandan 1 before circling back to Sunway Pyramid.
Along the way, participants were treated to stunning views of the city skyline, pushing many to reach their milestones.
The IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge 2024 attracted runners from all walks of life, with 80% hailing from Malaysia and the rest representing international participants.
With various categories—including the 21km, 10km, 5km, and the new 1.5km Junior category—the event catered to everyone from seasoned athletes to young enthusiasts.
Adding to the event’s prestige, it was recognized by the Malaysia Book of Records, which awarded it two notable titles: ‘First Full Marathon on a Highway’ and ‘Longest Marathon Course on a Closed Highway.’
The certificates were presented during the Full Marathon’s prize-giving ceremony.
Organized in partnership with IJM Corporation Berhad and Allianz Malaysia Berhad, the challenge ensured a smooth and enjoyable experience for all.
The organizing team, including New Pantai Expressway Sdn Bhd, Besraya (M) Sdn Bhd, and EC Pixels Asia, collaborated closely with the Malaysian Highway Authority and the Royal Malaysia Police to secure the route and ensure the safety of participants throughout the event.
