WOAM And IJM Deepen Partnership To Tackle Human Trafficking In Asia

Women on a Mission (WOAM) and IJM Join Forces to Combat Trafficking in Asia

$329K (RM 1.08M) Raised With Exciting Upcoming Missions To Be Announced Soon

Women on a Mission (WOAM), a Singapore-based non-profit focused on empowering women survivors of violence, continues its collaboration with the International Justice Mission (IJM), a global leader in fighting violent oppression, including sex trafficking and forced labour.

Together, they aim to partner with local justice systems to create safe communities across Asia.

Justice Illuminated Event at 1880 Singapore

On October 5, 2024, IJM, supported by WOAM volunteers, hosted a powerful “Justice Illuminated” event at 1880 Singapore. This gathering aimed to raise awareness and gather support for their shared mission, resulting in an impressive SGD 329,000 raised.

These funds will directly bolster IJM’s efforts to combat human trafficking and online sexual exploitation of children in the Philippines, allowing them to expand their reach and protect vulnerable populations.

IJM’s focus in Southeast Asia addresses two severe forms of trafficking: forced labour and online sexual exploitation of children. Their comprehensive approach involves rescuing victims, prosecuting offenders, strengthening justice systems, and aiding survivors in rebuilding their lives.

Empowering Women for Change

WOAM emphasizes the empowerment of women who have experienced violence, aiming to help them rebuild their lives. Their partnership with IJM reinforces their shared commitment to supporting women and girls and highlights the transformative role women can play in their communities.

By empowering survivors, WOAM fosters a ripple effect of positive change and advocates for a world free from violence and abuse. Their collaboration with IJM provides survivors a platform for healing and advocacy, amplifying their voices.

Raising Awareness on Online Sexual Exploitation of Children

WOAM’s partnership with IJM began in 2021, with their first delegation visiting Manila in 2022 to raise awareness of IJM’s critical work. In 2023, they undertook a second mission to Cebu, where IJM addressed the alarming issue of online sexual exploitation of children (OSEC).

The gala committee for this year’s event was established following the transformative experience of WOAM’s first trip. Inspired by their mission, the evening in 1880 Singapore revolved around the theme of dreaming for a better world, uniting WOAM and IJM in their goal to protect those in desperate situations.

The contributions from this event are dedicated to combating forced labour and OSEC, focusing on long-term, sustainable transformation.

Upcoming Missions to Southeast Asia

WOAM and IJM announced plans for future missions to Southeast Asian countries, providing opportunities for dedicated women leaders to engage with IJM’s critical work. These missions will offer insights into local justice collaborations and address human trafficking challenges in the region.

Rae Lee, Executive Director of IJM Singapore and Southeast Asia, emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating, “Through a strong partnership with WOAM, we convene champions to create lasting impact for those victimized by violence and exploitation. We anticipate our upcoming missions with excitement.”

A Call to Action

WOAM and IJM continue advocating for global responses to issues like OSEC and forced labour, emphasizing stronger laws and partnerships.

Christine Amour-Levar, Co-Founder of WOAM, expressed the profound impact of their collaboration with IJM, underscoring their commitment to scaling their efforts to make a lasting difference in vulnerable communities.

The combined efforts of WOAM and IJM drive forward the crucial mission to rescue individuals from forced labour and combat the horrific crime of online sexual exploitation of children.

The gala committee plays a pivotal role in amplifying this message, reinforcing the belief that no one should endure abuse. Through their partnership, WOAM and IJM exemplify the potential for real change through unity and collective action.
