KitKat Celebrates Malaysian Cocoa With New Dark Borneo Collection At International Cocoa Fair

Chocolate lovers, take note, there’s something special brewing in the world of local cocoa.

At the recent Malaysian International Cocoa Fair (MICF) 2025 in Kota Kinabalu, KitKat took centre stage by introducing a treat that’s proudly Malaysian: KitKat Dark Borneo, made with single-origin cocoa beans sourced exclusively from Sabah and Sarawak.

Nestlé Malaysia, the name behind KitKat, stepped up as Platinum Sponsor of the event, shining a spotlight on the country’s cocoa heritage and its untapped potential.

While Malaysia is already known for being a top cocoa processor, much of the raw beans are imported.

Through the launch of KitKat Dark Borneo, Nestlé is looking to change that narrative by working directly with local farmers to bring Malaysian-grown cocoa to the world.

The cocoa used in this new dark chocolate bar is cultivated in the rich volcanic soil and tropical climate of North Borneo, using sustainable and regenerative farming methods.

Through its Nestlé Borneo Cocoa Initiative, the company has introduced improved farming techniques to East Malaysia, helping farmers increase yields while caring for the environment.

Nestlé aims to source 10,000 metric tonnes of local cocoa by 2034, creating more opportunities for the local farming community.

What makes KitKat Dark Borneo stand out isn’t just its origins; it’s the taste. With 52% cocoa content, the chocolate is smooth, bold, and perfectly balanced, not too sweet, not too bitter.

It’s a sophisticated flavour that reflects the care and craftsmanship behind every bar. The product has already received international recognition, picking up the NIQ Breakthrough Innovation Award 2024.

As a delicious extension of this local flavour story, Nestlé has also introduced the KitKat Dark Borneo Ice Cream. Imagine a crispy wafer ice cream bar, wrapped in Borneo-sourced dark chocolate and topped with crushed KitKat bits, indulgence with a local twist.

Both products are made at Nestlé’s Chembong Industrial Complex in Negeri Sembilan, one of the largest Halal-certified confectionery and ice cream plants in Asia.

The facility also leads the way in eco-conscious production with efforts like biomass-powered boilers using renewable energy.

With KitKat Dark Borneo, chocolate becomes more than just a treat, it’s a meaningful connection to Malaysian soil, stories, and sustainability.
